290 REOPENS AFTER FIERY CRASH KILLS FOUR

Authorities say it may be several days before the identities of four victims of a horrific auto accident in Waller County are released.

Four people in a Volkswagen were killed in a fiery crash just before 1:00 this (Wednesday) morning on Highway 290 at FM-359 in Hempstead.

A DPS spokesman says the bodies have been taken to the medical examiner’s office and it may be some time before positive identifications can be made.

According to the accident report, the Volkswagen was west-bound on 290, when it was rear-ended by a speeding Chevy Impala.  The collision forced the Volkswagen off the road into a bar ditch where it burst into flames, engulfing the entire vehicle.

The four victims were not discovered until the flames had been extinguished.

The driver of the Impala was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan where he is expected to recover.

The area of the accident was closed down until shortly after 2:00 this (Wednesday) afternoon.

DPS troopers say alcohol may have played a role in the crash.

  1. I am so sad to see these lives lost. It really is terrible.

With regard to my comments above, I did not directly tie this accident into the construction, despite the fact that I have seen many accidents in the construction zones. I used this forum to share publically that I think the 290 construction project has been badly managed and has put people at risk. This weekend, I again witnessed a bad accident in the area of the construction, and watched traffic pile up on 290 east because of lane closures while almost no people were present working and no work was being done. There has to be a better way than what we are seeing.

  2. Authorities say several days to identify. Social media did it same day. Shameless and sad. Disturbing what people put on social media

  3. 290 has become so dangerous with all of the construction going on. The ultra narrow lanes with no shoulders have become a serious safety hazard. That spills over into the area without construction due to the mass of frustrated drivers who had fight. They need to do a better job of planning construction and having alternate lanes that can actually handle the traffic flow passing through those area. Hopefully our locally elected officials will look into that.

    1. All the planning in the world won’t make up for a person’s terrible decision. This accident happened at 1 am outside if the construction zone.

      1. I want to cry… in fact .. I’m crying.. since yesterday morning… my heart is broken just thinking of the horrible picture my eyes saw… I don’t know anyone of the victims… but I just can’t stop thinking of the way their lives were taken ??

        1. I am a family member of the victims and we are wanting any information leading to an understanding of how the Why isn’t for us to understand. Please contact me via denise.grant2012@gmail.com. The car held 5 passengers 3 ages 3,4 and 5 and they’re saying they only located 4. Please if anyone saw anything send email above.

    2. The accident was 6.5 miles from the construction. It had nothing to do with the wreck. It is just a sad incident.
