80-YEAR-OLD SOMERVILLE WOMAN SCAMMED OUT OF $600

A grandmother from Somerville has fallen victim to a sinister cash scheme.

Sylveria De Leon thought she was helping a family member in need, but instead ending up losing $600.

Three weeks ago, De Leon received phone calls from someone claiming to be her grandson. The person went on to convince De Leon that her grandson had gotten into a bad car accident and needed $600 in cash. Later, De Leon says a cab driver from College Station came and picked up the money.

When De Leon’s sons came for a visit and she discovered the story about her grandson was untrue, she called the police. De Leon is coming forward with her story to warn others to be wary of phone scams, especially the elderly.

The incident is currently under investigation by Somerville police.

  1. This happened to my grandmother a few months ago in Brenham but it was thousands of dollars. They made her believe one of her grandkids was in jail and needed money in order to get out and that she was hurt & did want my aunt and uncle to know. That night she went to their house & was scammed by someone from the Dominican Republic. There are terrible people on this earth but we can only pray for them. Never give people money over the phone.
