Buccaneers drop doubleheader in Alvin

ALVIN, Texas – Going into the Region XIV Conference series with the Alvin Dolphins, Blinn baseball coach Harvey McIntyre knew the main goal was to slow down the Dolphins offense.

On Friday, Alvin proved how strong its offense is.

The 12th-ranked Dolphins swept the Buccaneers 8-0 and 8-5 in the series-opening doubleheader. The teams end the series Saturday at 2 p.m. at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham.

It was a tough Game 1 for the Blinn offense, which fell victim to a perfect game by Alvin pitcher Brian Mitchell.

The 14th-ranked Buccaneers (10-7, 3-3) finally got on the board in the first inning of Game 2 when two Alvin errors led to three Blinn runs. The Dolphins offense quickly negated Blinn’s lead with a four-run second that gave them a 6-3 lead.

Reed Robinson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Cullen Gassaway was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Clayton Auippa and Stephen Stuart each had a hit.

Sophomore Robbie Dickey took the loss in Game 1 after allowing four runs on six hits in four innings. Sophomore Shane McCarley was tagged with the loss in Game 2 after tossing 1 2-3 innings and allowing six runs—four earned—on six hits.
