APPEALS COURT RULES AGAINST TEXAS VOTER I.D. LAW

A federal appeals court has ruled that Texas' strict voter ID law violates the Voting Rights Act and has ordered changes before the November election.

The ruling was issued Wednesday by the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The ruling instructs a lower court to make changes that fix – what the court calls, the "discriminatory effect" of the 2011 law in the months leading up to this fall's election.

But the ruling also said the lower court should make changes that disrupt this year's election season as little as possible.

  1. Texas has the great distinction of having the worst voter suppression record and laws. There was still a poll tax in this county in the late 50’s ,put in place to solely discourage poor persons of color. Have you read what is required to get an ID that is acceptable to vote in Texas? If you do not have a drivers license, then you must go thru a intricate, detailed and tedious process to attain an acceptable form of ID. AND you must have transportation to the office that issues the ID, which most likely will not be in any of the very small rural communities. There are only 46 Tx counties with alternate locations other than DPS offices. There are mobile units available in some Tx cities one or two days a YEAR, but again , both mobile and alternate locations are at a fixed location many miles away from the person. So if Gramps and or/ Gran live in rural Tx, no longer drive, how do they get an ID to vote? And if they do manage to get one, it will expire in 6 years. If their Id is not acceptable, then they can have a provisional vote, which will not be included in a ” valid” election count. But if they are world travelers and have a passport, or happen to be packin’, then they may be in luck. Between the voter supression laws and the gerrymandering(illegal) practices of the Texas legislature, it screams racism on behalf of every voter who put Texas politicians in office. Is that really who we are?? How can any person who wants to “make America great again” want to destroy the basic constitutional voting rights of Americans? Is this what are military personnel ( of all races) are dying for? Or do we just like the 2nd amendment? We should make voter registration mandatory at age 18 and registration opportunities should be made available on a regular basis thru community facilities, churches and schools. That is if Texas really wants to be a shining example of American values.

  2. The thing is, the State of Texas will issue you a valid ID card for FREE. You just need to go get it.

  3. Having to prove who you are to vote is discrimination? Really? Then I guess it’s discrimination
to ask for ID at liquor stores, car rentals, airlines, hotels, etc.?

  4. The liberal Supreme Court is helping to destroy America! So let millions of illegals come in and get everything free! We the taxpayers foot the bill! More crime and terrorists r coming in! They will sign them up to vote liberal! Really like force them to vote! America is in 20 trillion debt already! Say goodbye to the America we knew! How sad!
