ARREST MADE IN BURLESON COUNTY SHOOTING CASE

An argument over a gate escalated into a Burleson County man being shot twice in the stomach.

69-year-old Richard Lemeron Jones of Stafford was arrested Monday on an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge, after shooting 48-year-old Gregory Stonum twice in the stomach with a .22 caliber pistol on Sunday.  Jones was released the same day, on $10,000 bond.  Jones could still face felony charges.

According to DPS Sgt. Jimmy Morgan, Stonum was taken to St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.  Sgt. Morgan could not provide updates on Stonum’s injuries or recovery.

Burleson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to 1088 County Road 221 at 9:15 a.m., after the district attorney’s office was alerted to the incident.  Officers arrived after an ambulance crew had already taken Stonum to the hospital.

Burleson County Sheriff’s Deputy Christine Labertew said the two men are cousins, and were arguing about a gate on land they shared.

The property where the altercation occurred is located roughly 10 miles east of Caldwell, off of State Highway 21 East.
