An attorney for the family of Sandra Bland says they’ve reached a settlement in their civil suit.

Attorney Cannon Lambert is telling media outlets the wrongful death lawsuit was settled for $1.9 million.

According to Lambert, the Waller County jail, will pay the bulk of the settlement -- $1.8 million.  The settlement with the Texas Department of Public Safety was capped by state statutes at $100,000.

Bland was stopped for failing to signal a lane change in July of last year, in Waller County.  The stop escalated into Bland’s arrest.

She was found dead in her jail cell in Hempstead several days later of an apparent suicide.

  1. I think the money is for the way the Trooper handled himself, which was embarrassing to the department. Then she was paid for not getting the correct medical care, or lack there of, which was bad for the jail.

She didn’t get paid for her acts, she got paid because they messed up on a couple of things. Had she gotten a ticket for her traffic violation, she would have paid, but in this case, it was the other way around. Bottom line. It could have been a brown, white or other person and the outcome should have been the same. Stop blaming race. Although we don’t we know if she was a racist or if he was, it’s irrelevant.

  2. Rights and Justice? She had drugs in her system, and she hung herself! Doesn’t sound like the family deserved any money for that! Just my opinion.

  3. How can people be mean .She was someones daughter someone’s sister. She was in jail for a turn single valation. RIP

  4. This is the way corrupt people do and have been doing in this country for years. Do something wrong and throw money at it to make it go away. We get a glimpse of what happen then they pay and seal records plus put a stipulation on the order that you can’t speak about it even with new evidence that may arise without some type of prosecution. But when the civil suit was brought against O.J. Simpson was there this much uproar or was everyone glad that he was punished financially? You can only hide behind your true colors for so long.

  5. If she was such upstanding citizen, why did she have drugs in her system????????????? Another way to spend our tax money. Where was her family when she needed them???????? That is just crazy to pay the family that kind of money. What good does it do to pay for the medical exam after her death. When is going to quit???

    1. What did drugs have to do with her going to jail after being pulled over for failure to use signal! N no money won’t make everything better or bring her back but maybe just maybe the county doesn’t want to pay out money like that! And being to enforce guards to do there job the correct way!

  6. It’s well deserved but also sad because of the circumstances!!! Rights and JUSTICE is being PREVAILED and PEOPLE are being handled accountable instead of getting a slap on the back not wrist!!

  7. I expected the sly comments on here. The fact of the matter is the officer was absolutely wrong and because of his action a civil suit was brought forth and this is the outcome. Whether or not they had the funds to get her out is up for debate. Everything that has involved a black man or woman get the back lash and tons of comments which are ridiculous. It’s not about getting rich it is about a court that held them accountable. Until we stop being so judgmental the divide in this country is going to get even bigger. Listening to some of the comments and reactions makes me angry as a veteran. But I fought for ALL to say their peace. Remember under GOD. Are you really under GODS umbrella. Marinate on that one…..Have a blessed day

  8. Are you kidding me? ? The family that cared Soooo much to rush to get her out of jail now rushes to get rich. ….smh

  9. Absolute Bull… NO WAY NO REASON should this happen. There is so much more I want to say but kwhi wont post it like many of my other replies……..

  10. You know who else had people die in captivity. Going down a dangerous path here when they aloud this settlement.
