As Washington County continues to make plans for the eventual construction of a Justice Center, neighboring Austin County is pondering the cost of one also.
During a recent meeting of the Austin County Commissioners, Ken Burns of Burns Architecture LLC said it could cost almost $28 million to convert the current Austin County Jail and Sheriff’s Office into a justice center. As designed, the justice center would consist of two floors added above the existing jail and Sheriff’s office. The County Clerk and District Attorney would have offices on the second floor. The third floor would house a District Clerk’s office, judges’ offices, along with both a large and small court room.
Should the Austin County Commissioners choose to build the Justice Center, instead of making repairs and remodeling the current facility, voters would be asked to pass a bond issue to fund it.
