AUSTIN COUNTY WARRANT SCAM WARNING

The Austin Co. Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a warrant scam.

The Sheriff’s office is reporting that some Austin County residents are receiving calls from someone who calls himself “Chris”, who speaks with a foreign accent, states that he is a dispatcher with the Austin County Sheriff’s Office, and has a warrant for their arrest.

People are then instructed to call 717-685-2319 and ask for a “John Harris” with the “Justice Department”.

When the call comes in, the caller ID will show that the call comes from the Austin County SO’s main number 979-865-3111.  However, the office is warning this is a scam and do not call this number.

The callers will try to get the victim to send them numbers from a Green Dot card or a Western Union money gram.

The Austin County Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens they will never call a person and tell them to send money anywhere.

Authorities warn that this scam is occurring in other areas of the country and has started showing up in Austin County.

Anyone who receives one of these calls is urged to hang up immediately.
