AUTHORITIES CAPTURE WANTED WOMAN

  

A woman who allegedly made false accusations about being sexually assaulted while in the Washington County Jail has been tracked down.

According to Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak, 22-year old Kayla Lehann Merritt and her mother, identified as 52-year old Betty Sue Merritt, were both arrested by the Denton Police Department after they were suspected of attempting to commit Theft by Check.

According to the Denton Police Department, both had entered Ace Cash Express and attempted to cash fraudulent checks on closed accounts. 

During the course of their investigation, Denton authorities discovered Kayla Merritt was wanted by Washington County on multiple charges of Theft by Check and a Motion to Revoke Probation.

She was transferred from Denton to the Washington County jail and is being held on a charge of False Report to a Peace Officer. Her bond was set at $2,500.00 and she remains in custody. 

The charge stems from her accusations of being sexually assaulted while in the custody of the Washington County jail July 24th of this year.

The  Texas Rangers determined Merritt’s accusations to be false.
