BFD RESPOND TO PROPANE LEAK IN PARKING LOT

The Brenham Fire Department on Thursday around 1:10pm was dispatched to 2106 S Market St. for propane leaking from a propane cylinder on the back of a pickup truck located in a parking lot.

BFD responders found a propane cylinder that holds 100 pounds or approximately 25 gallons of propane that had just been refilled. Propane was leaking from the bottom of a rust pitted cylinder.

The BFD began preforming air monitoring to ensure there was no flammable atmosphere and stood by until the tank had emptied its contents.

The only loss in this incident was propane primarily due to windy conditions that dissipated the vapors. Propane vapor is heavier than air, tends to settle in low places, and can easily find an ignition source due to propane’s high flammability limits.

The Brenham Fire Department advises that the next time you have a propane cylinder refilled visually inspect the cylinder for damage, pitting, or rust. If you have concerns have the refill station safety check the cylinder.
