BHS STUDENTS ATTEND “COUNTRY GIRLS CAN CODE” EVENT

Five students from Brenham High School recently traveled to Austin, to participate in a day of developing computer programming skills called “Country Girls Can Code” sponsored by Techs4Tex, a small, non-profit organization. The purpose of the event was to give high school girls from rural communities an opportunity to explore computer programming and build capacity for computer science careers. Forty-nine girls from eight school districts in rural areas between Austin and Houston worked alongside ten female mentors currently working in Austin in technology careers, led by Trisha Katz, Senior Software Engineer at Outdoor Voices, and Jessica Tremblay, Senior Visual Designer and Front End Developer for IBM Storage.

The girls listened to mentors speak on topics such as the variety of career opportunities available, and the need for more females in the industry.  . Attendees received Chromebooks for the day to learn the basics of HTML, CSS and design thinking. The girls worked to build individual websites in meeting rooms overlooking the state capitol.  The day concluded with the girls showcasing their websites, and each girl and mentor received a Country Girls Can Code t-shirt.  Attending from Brenham High School were Katalina Andrade, Tina Nguyen, Katie Perkins, Faith Lehmann, and Megan Nitsch.
