BISD BOARD TO DISCUSS DISTRICT OF INNOVATION PLAN

The Brenham ISD Board of Trustees will discuss the final version of the proposed District of Innovation (DOI) Plan during their meeting on Monday.

The Texas Education Agency allows Districts of Innovation to waive certain TEA requirements. On February 9th, Brenham ISD proposed the DOI improvement plan to the District Education Improvement Committee. The plan includes waivers in three areas:

1.     They are requesting an earlier start of the school year in order to balance the fall and spring semesters and allow students to enroll in college courses that begin in June.  Currently the TEA requires that students begin school no earlier than the 4th Monday in August.

2.     The district would like to waive the requirement to hire certified teaches for Career and Technical Education and Dual Credit classes.  This will allow more flexibility in hiring trade professionals and college instructors who may not have their teacher certification but are more than qualified to teach.

3.     The district is requesting a two year probationary period for newly hired teachers in order to evaluate them over several school years. Currently this district is limited to a one year probationary contract.

The school board will also hold a public hearing to discuss Texas Academic Performance Reports. The reports pull together a wide range of information on the performance of students in each school and district in Texas every year. Performance is shown disaggregated by student groups, including ethnicity and socioeconomic status. The reports also provide extensive information on school and district staff, programs, and student demographics. Reports can be accessed by clicking here.

The school board will also:

  • Discuss the 2017-2018 instructional calendar
  • Hear the end of six weeks campus administrative reports and activities updates
  • Consider an application for low attendance day waivers for January 27th and January 31st
  • Consider an application for an early release waiver
  • Hear an update on the Krause Elementary School renovation
