The Brenham School Board approved the hiring of a new principal for the High School at their meeting Thursday evening.  Joseph Chandler will be replacing Steve Skrla as High School principal.  It was announced last month that Skrla will become the Director of Counselors and PEIMS for the district.  Chandler comes to Brenham from Fort Bend ISD where he has served as principal of Willowridge High School for the past 3 years.  He has been involved in education for 19 years.

The board also approved the hiring of two other positions.  Dr. Jamey Johnson will become the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the district.  She is currently serving is a similar position in the Tyler ISD.  Jessica Johnston will become the new Director of Communications and Special Projects for BISD.  She is currently an Instructional Technology Specialist for the district.  She will be working alongside Beverly England who splits her time between media classes, news releases, and being assistant tennis coach.

The board also unanimously approved a resolution denouncing the state’s standardized testing program.  The resolution points out that over the past 20 years the number of state mandated standardized tests has increased but there has been no measurable improvement in college readiness.  In March of this year, students across the state faced difficulties with the on line STAAR exam after a computer glitch deleted their answers. The full text of the resolution is available here: Brenham School Board Resolution

In other action, the board voted to keep its current lineup of officers the same for the coming year.   Natalie Lange will continue as president, Melvin Ehlert as vice-president, and Susan Jenkins as secretary.  The board also heard a report from the DAEP/PRIDE Academy principal Michael Watts on the success of that campus and from Susan Chovanec on the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support program.  Chovanec is an Early Intervention Behavior Specialist with the district and works with young students who are having social and behavioral problems in class.

The board also took time to present the “You Make a Difference” award to the PTOs, band parents, and sports booster clubs at the Middle School, Junior High, and High Schools.
