BLINN ALUMNI DONATE TOWARD DANCE/CHEER RINGS

Blinn cheer and dance teams each won their third consecutive title in 2016

The Blinn College Alumni & Friends Association and Alumni Lettermen Association have donated $1,000 to support the purchase of rings commemorating Blinn’s 2016 national cheer and dance championships.

Blinn’s cheer and dance teams each won their third consecutive national titles at the National Cheer Association & National Dance Association Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships last spring, and the Blinn Foundation seeks to raise $13,500 to cover the cost of the students’ rings.

This marks the fifth time the Foundation has raised funds for Blinn national championship teams since 2013, including twice for the volleyball program and two previous occasions for cheer and dance.

The cheer team won this year’s Small Coed Cheer Division II national competition with a score of 96.65 in the finals, more than two points more than second-place University of Central Oklahoma (94.6).

“This was basically a dream-come-true performance for us,” said Michael Brewster, cheer coach. “We set goals at the beginning of the year and we achieved those goals at nationals.”

The dance team earned a national title in Pom Division II with a score of 9.403 in the finals, beating out second-place Newberry (S.C.) College. The Pom Division is new to the NDA this year and Blinn is the first-ever national champion in that division.

The dance team came close to winning two national titles, as it placed second in the Team Performance III Division with a score of 9.383, just below national champion Shobi (Japan) University (9.473).

“I thought the dance team did amazing in both competitions,” said Sarah Barland-Flisowski, spirit coordinator. “The team had to come back and compete in the Pom Division an hour after placing second in the Team Performance and did a great job of regrouping.”

Blinn’s Alumni & Friends Association maintains contact with all former students and friends of the College to encourage support for and participation in Blinn’s educational, cultural, athletic and social programs, to encourage student recruitment, to assist the College in achieving its planned goals and objectives and to provide fellowship among former students and friends.

The Alumni Lettermen Association maintains contact with all former athletes, coaches and athletic personnel to encourage support and participation in Blinn’s educational and athletic programs and to provide fellowship among former student-athletes and friends of Blinn College.

Since its inception in 2000, the Foundation has raised funds to purchase classroom equipment and supplies, and help launch major construction projects across Blinn’s campuses, including the A.W. Hodde, Jr. Technical Education Center, the J. Hal and Allyne Machat Music Facility, the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex and the Bert and Mae Dean Wheeler Residence Hall.
