BLINN BRENHAM CAMPUS HOST SECOND ANNUAL LIVESTOCK JUDGING CAMP

The Blinn College Livestock Judging Camp attracted more than 180 participants in just its second year as youths from across the state came to Blinn’s Brenham campus to learn from the reigning national team of the year.

The livestock judging camp gives students a hands-on learning environment taught by one of the nation’s top livestock judging teams. Former students and current livestock judging team members assist coaches with the instruction during the camp.

After attracting more than 100 participants last year, organizers split the camp into beginner and advanced age groups.

“We work a lot on the reasoning part of livestock judging with the older group,” said Bryn Behnke, assistant dean of Agriculture & Applied Technologies. “With the younger group we really let them have fun with the livestock judging and learn the fundamentals.”

Proceeds from the camp help offset costs associated with traveling to competitions for the livestock judging team.

Camp participants get an up-close look at Blinn College and the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex.

“We have been taking the kids around campus to see all of the facilities,” Behnke said. “It gives them a great chance to see the entire school just in case they would like to attend Blinn in the future.”

Blinn’s livestock judging team was named the national team of the year in 2014-15 after placing first in three out of four competitions and second in the fourth.

Livestock judging is part of Blinn’s Agricultural Sciences Program, which enrolls approximately 800 students and is roughly four times the size of any other two-year agricultural program in the state. Blinn offers Agricultural Science classes on all of its campuses, with the Rankin Complex serving as the program’s hub.

In addition to its excellence in the classroom, Blinn offers extracurricular educational activities in the areas of livestock judging, agriculture club, wildlife, agriculture mechanics, horticulture and agriculture sciences.
