BLINN CARPENTRY BOOT CAMP TO BE OFFERED

A new Carpentry Boot Camp offered by Blinn College, the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will provide job seekers the foundation they need to work on a framing crew at local construction sites.

The two-week, $700 course runs from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 5-16, at the AgriLife Extension facilities at The Texas A&M University System’s RELLIS Campus in Bryan. It is designed for students with no prior experience in construction. Students will learn to use tools commonly utilized on residential construction sites and will learn the roles of all members of a framing crew. A Certificate of Completion will be awarded to all students who successfully complete the Boot Camp.

“Even if you have never swung a hammer, you can enroll in the Carpentry Boot Camp and within two weeks you will have the skills necessary to succeed as the member of a framing crew,” said Jay Anderson, Blinn College Dean of Technical and Community Programs.

The course covers job-site safety, the safe operation and use of basic residential construction tools, the basic elements of residential framing, reading residential architectural drawings, and basic building code requirements. At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to:

discuss basic safety issues related to residential and low-rise multi-family residential construction;
demonstrate the safe and proper use of typical hand and power tools;
demonstrate the ability to construct the typical elements of residential construction, including wall systems, door and window openings, floor and ceiling systems, and gabled roof systems;
select appropriate sizes of floor and ceiling joint from building code tables;
and demonstrate the ability to work as part of a framing crew.
The carpentry programs each begin with a core course that will be offered June 5-22. Once the core course is complete, the student can enroll in the carpentry course.

Registration for the Carpentry Boot Camp and the carpentry programs is available at 301 Post Office Street in Bryan.
