BLINN COLLEGE ALUMNI & FRIENDS ASSOCIATION GIVES BACK WITH GRANT PROGRAM

The Blinn College Alumni & Friends Association is giving back to Blinn College faculty, staff, and students through a new grant program that was initiated last year.

The association will award quarterly grants throughout the year with a maximum of $1,000. The three grants awarded so far this year have been to the Blinn Department of Housing and Residence Life, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society, and the Bryan Campus Library.

“This is one way four our association to be more visible in the community and across campus,” said Kyle Merten, Blinn Alumni Relations Director.

The first $1,000 grant was awarded to the Department of Housing and Residence Life to fund student activities and service projects, such as a campus clean-up.

Alumni & Friends also awarded $1,000 to PTK to assist students who may have difficulty paying membership dues of the honor society. Fifty students will receive a stipend that will cut their membership dues in half.

Phi Theta Kappa is the official honor society for two-year colleges by the American Association of Community Colleges. Founded in 1918, PTK promotes scholarship, leadership service and fellowship among its members. To be accepted, students must carry at least a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) with at least 12 transferable hours.

The third $1,000 grant was awarded to the Bryan Campus Library to purchase an electric campfire box where students can plug in their phone chargers and computers.

“The money we generate is going back to the College in many different ways,” Merten said.

Applications for the grant must be faculty, staff, or students within a recognized student organization at Blinn College and all campuses all eligible. For more information, visit the Alumni & Friends Association website at http://foundation.blinn.edu/alumni/join.

The mission of the Alumni & Friends Association is to maintain contact with all former students and friends of the College, to encourage support for and participate in the educational, cultural, athletic and social programs of the College, to encourage personnel recruitment of students by members, to assist the College in achieving planned goals and objectives, and to provide fellowship among former students, friends and support.
