BLINN COLLEGE CHAMBER AND CONCERT CHOIRS PRESENT “RISE AND SHINE”

Blinn College’s chamber and concert choirs will come together for their first performance of the school year Oct. 13.

The free concert, titled “Rise and Shine,” will begin at 7 p.m. at Finke Hall on the Blinn-Brenham campus.

Both choirs will perform musical selections from Argentina and Brazil and then come together to perform “Five Mystical Songs” by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Faculty will also take part with a wind ensemble, and Daniel Trevor Bircher will sing baritone. Cheryl Amelang will be the pianist and Paulo Gomes will be the conductor for the one-hour performance.

“The idea of ‘Rise and Shine’ came when I started here and saw all the talented students here at Blinn,” Gomes said. “I selected songs that will help the students improve that talent and help them shine.”

The concert and chamber choir will combine to have over 30 students in the performance.

“Each song we are performing has a vocal challenge or a text challenge of singing a song with a different language,” Gomes said. “We will be singing in English, Portuguese and Latin.”

The concert choir, which is open to all students, will sing three songs, followed by five songs from the chamber choir, which accepts students based upon their audition performance. The two choirs will combine to sing the “Five Mystical Songs.”

“Those who attend will have the opportunity to experience some of the most amazing music,” Gomes said. “The choir students are really starting to sing at a different level.”

Finke Hall is located inside the Schmidt Building at 800 College Ave in Brenham (map).

The Music Program is part of Blinn’s Division of Visual/Performing Arts & Kinesiology, which offers courses in architecture, arts, kinesiology, music, theatre and communication studies. For more information on courses or upcoming performances, visit: www.blinn.edu/vpa.
