BLINN COLLEGE ‘EXCITED’ TO WELCOME TAMMY SPOHN TO BOARD

  

Blinn College officials say they are excited to welcome Tammy Spohn, Chief Nursing Officer at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – College Station, to the school's Board of Trustees.

“We are excited to welcome Tammy Spohn to our board,” said David Sommer, President of the Blinn Board of Trustees. “In addition to her wide-ranging interests and remarkable accomplishments, her professional expertise will prove incredibly valuable as Blinn continues to provide local healthcare facilities the registered and vocational nurses, surgical technicians, emergency responders, radiologic technologists, and other healthcare professionals they need to provide unparalleled medical care throughout our communities.”

Spohn was appointed to the seat by the Brazos County Commissioners Court. Her term begins immediately and runs through Nov. 30, 2017.

“I am honored to be able to serve the long-standing institution that is Blinn College,” Spohn said. “My educational journey started at a two-year college and without that stepping stone to become a nurse, I may not have ended up where I am today with the ability to lead in one of the most trusted professions in the nation.  I truly have a special place in my heart for Blinn and other community colleges that work so hard to make education affordable and accessible to all.”

As Chief Nursing Officer at Baylor Scott & White, Spohn oversees nursing within the College Station hospital and clinics, and is responsible for overseeing nursing at the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Brenham. Alongside Baylor Scott & White – College Station President Jason Jennings, Spohn played a key role in Blinn’s launch of a new Surgical Technology Program in November.

Spohn most recently served as Vice President of Patient Care Services at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, where she was responsible for more than 500 employees and 10 in-patient nursing units. Before joining Baylor Scott & White, Spohn served as Director of Surgical Services and as Medical and Pediatric Unit Director for Skagit Valley Hospital in Washington.

Spohn earned her MBA in business administration from Western Governors University and her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Seattle Pacific University. She obtained an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in registered nursing from Umpqua Community College, (OR).

Spohn fills the seat vacated by Nancy Berry, who was elected to serve as a Brazos County Precinct 3 County Commissioner in January. Prior to Berry’s resignation, Blinn College and Berry requested an opinion from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton as to whether Berry’s simultaneous service on the Blinn Board of Trustees and the Brazos County Commissioners Court would represent a conflict of interest. The Attorney General’s response stated that “a court would likely conclude that the conflicting-loyalties aspect of common-law incompatibility precludes an individual from simultaneously serving as a member of the Blinn College Board of Trustees and as a Brazos County commissioner.”
