BLINN COLLEGE MUSIC DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES NEW DIRECTORS

  

 The Blinn College Music Department has named its new assistant director of bands and its new choir director.

Dr. Kendall Prinz, an assistant professor of music at Northwest Missouri State University, will serve as assistant director of bands while Dr. Paulo Gomes, a teaching assistant at the University of Houston, will serve as choir director.

Prinz had served as assistant professor of music at Northwest Missouri State University since 2012 and was previously director of bands at Taylor Middle School. Prinz earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in tuba performance from the University of Texas at Austin.

“Kendall Prinz has a wealth of experience,” said Sarah Burke, director of bands. “He will be a great asset for our students.”

Prinz will assist with marching band and will be director of the symphonic band. Tuba is a specialty instrument for Prinz.

“I like the area and I am originally from Texas and have heard great things about the Blinn program,” Prinz said. “I want to come in and make the Blinn music program the best it can be.”

Gomes has been a graduate teacher assistant at the University of Houston the last three years and previously served as visiting professor at Worcester State University in Massachusetts. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Houston.

“Paulo Gomes has a variety of vocal repertoire and has international experience,” said Todd Quinlan, department head. “He knows the Houston area very well and that will help us in recruiting.”

Gomes will conduct the large chorus, serve as director of the small chamber ensemble and teach music courses.

“I like teaching and making music more fulfilling,” Gomes said. “I want to deliver to the students a fulfilling music experience, whether they are music majors or just music listeners.”

The Music Program is part of Blinn’s Division of Visual & Performing Arts, which offers courses in architecture, arts, music, theatre and communication studies.
