BLINN COLLEGE THEATRE PRESENTS “ZOMBIE PROM”
The Blinn College-Brenham Campus Theatre Arts Program will showcase the comedy “Zombie Prom” at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center Oct. 12-15.
The second play featured in the Season of Dark Tales, “Zombie Prom,” by Dana Rowe and John Dempsey, is a spoof of 1950s horror movies.
“We are doing it the way the original production was done in the early 1990s off Broadway,” said Brad Nies, Theatre Director. “It’s like the audience is reading a comic book. The characters, costuming, and acting approach will be very cartoonish and comical.”
The storyline starts with pretty senior Toffee, who falls for the class bad boy, Jonny, but family pressure forces her to end the romance.
“My favorite part of the storyline is Toffee and Jonny’s relationship,” sophomore Cassin Villa-Lobos said. “Toffee is a goody two-shoes who can’t date the boy who is seemingly from across the tracks, but in the end love conquers all.”
Lobos will play Candy, a nervous cheerleader and one of Toffee’s best friends in the play.
“I am looking forward to getting to play a fun character,” Villa-Lobos said. “She is really funny and has a really annoying voice, which I like being able to do. It is really a fun process for me.”
After Jonny charges off on his motorcycle into a nuclear waste dump, he returns as a zombie determined to take Toffee to prom. No one at the school can understand their love, but history comes to the rescue while a tuneful selection of original music keeps the action rockin’ and rollin’ across the stage.
“The students are excited because this is a funny play with a lot of music, a little singing and dancing, and a little bit of something for everyone,” Nies said. “I just think people are really going to enjoy it.”
The curtain will rise at 7 p.m. Oct. 12-14 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15, in the O’Donnell Center.
“There is some dark humor, a lot of comedy, and a sad scene,” said freshman Jaci Weidemann, assistant stage manager. “It fits everyone’s personality, and I mainly am looking forward to how people react to it.”
“Zombie Prom” will be directed by Brad Nies, who will be joined by technical director Kevin Patrick, costume designer and choreographer Jennifer Patrick, and musical director Jill Stewart.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for Blinn students, children, and senior citizens. Students, Blinn faculty, and staff receive free tickets with the code “staffcomp.”
