BLINN COLLEGE TO CONSIDER ADOPTING HANDGUN POLICY

Blinn College trustees will consider adopting a “campus carry” policy on concealed handguns during their meeting on Tuesday.

On Aug. 1st this year, a law allowing concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons on community college campuses will go into effect.

Last year, Blinn formed a 34-member Campus Carry Task Force made up of faculty, staff, students, and administrators. The committee was tasked will providing Blinn President Mary Hensley with recommendations regarding implementation of the law.

The new law requires the president of each institution to establish rules regarding concealed handguns.

A 250-page report included in Tuesday's agenda packet recommends that concealed handguns be allowed in classrooms. It also recommends firearms not be banned in campus residential facilities, provided the individual student has an approved storage device.

The report also calls for no ban in “single occupant” faculty offices. However faculty members would be able to seek a ban through an appeals process. Handguns would not be allowed in sporting events or University Interscholastic League-sponsored events, as is dictated by state law.

The full report can be read by clicking here.

Also during Tuesday's meeting, the board will hear a presentation by Mark Posada,  Texas Engineering Extension service Manager of Education and Training Initiatives.

Last year, Blinn College, TEEX and Texas A&M entered into a “memorandum of understanding” to expand workforce training in the area. The board will hear an update about the ongoing training offered by TEEX along with current and future partnerships with Blinn.

The trustees will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on Texas A&M University’s RELLIS campus in College Station in building 7751 East, Classroom D.

  1. Blinn may have its problems but stop and look around Brenhamite your own brenhamittes are also the problem. Stop pointing fingers at Blinn. Get your facts straight yes Blinn may have students that do that but there are more people in BRENHAM that also do drugs. Stop blaming Blinn for BRENHAM drug problem. Stereotyping a certain group needs to stop. Most of these students are here to learn.

    1. Really, I don’t deny that there are Brenham residents that are in trouble with the law. In fact, there are quite a few. But, I DO have my facts straight. Read the news more often and you’ll see the NUMEROUS and CONSTANT arrests of Blinn Students. It was not this way just 5-10 years ago. It sounds like you were not here to know what it was like.

You also helped to make my point…I am glad Blinn will be adopting the handgun policy so the students that are here to learn can defend themselves, if necessary, against those who are here for other recreational reasons.

  2. I just removed Blinn from my daughters list of colleges. What is the reason? Just showing how conservative the school board is. Bringing guns into the school makes no sense!

    1. Robert ,
You are aware that this is the STATE law that community college MUST allow concealed carry. ALL four year Texas university have now allowed concealed carry for the last year. All Texas community college MUST allow concealed carry as of AUG 1st. This has nothing to do about Blinns Board.

    2. Robert, you will have to take every public college and university off your daughter’s list. You have a problem with Paxton and the state legislature, not Blinn College.

    3. Blinn is responding to the laws enacted about the legislators in Austin we voted for. I think if you want to change things like this, you’ll have to start at the state level.

    4. First, if you want to avoid campus carry, you had better remove ALL public colleges and universities in the state of Texas from your daughter’s list because this is a STATE law that went into effect August 1, 2016 for 4-year schools and will go into effect on August 1, 2017 for 2-year schools. The Blinn board is not voting on whether to allow campus carry (that’s already been decided by the state) but on what their specific school policy will be. Also, you should understand that gun-free zones do not deter criminals. None of us want our children to be in any place bullets could fly, but this law allows good guys with guns to fight back against those who would wreak havoc on innocent people

    5. Robert, consider doing some homework so you know what’s going on before you make statements.

  3. With the exponential increase in drug arrests and other criminal activity stemming from Blinn students, I sincerely hope this measure passes so the law abiding students will have a means to defend themselves if necessary. Blinn needs to do something to curb the criminal activity, whether it’s increase the admission requirements or institute a drug arrest-kicked out policy. It’s gotten ridiculous the last 5 years or so.
