BLINN FOUNDATION SEEKS DONORS TO HELP PURCHASE NATIONAL CHAMPION RINGS

The Blinn College Foundation is seeking donors to help purchase rings for Blinn’s national champion cheer and dance teams.

“We are thrilled to do it,” said Susan Myers, Foundation executive director. “It is our pleasure to support these young men and women, who donate so much of their time and energy to support Blinn College and community events throughout the year.”

This marks the fifth time the Foundation has raised funds for Blinn national championship team since 2013, including twice for the volleyball program and two previous occasions for cheer and dance.

The cheer team won this year’s Small Coed Cheer Division II national competition with a score of 96.65 in the finals, more than two points more than second-place University of Central Oklahoma (94.6).

“This was basically a dream-come-true performance for us,” said Michael Brewster, cheer coach. “We set goals at the beginning of the year and we achieved those goals at nationals.”

The dance team earned a national title in Pom Division II with a score of 9.403 in the finals, beating out second place Newberry (S.C.) College. The Pom Division is new to the NDA this year and Blinn is the first-ever national champion in that division.

The dance team came close to winning two national titles, as it placed second in the Team Performance III Division with a score of 9.383, just below national champion Shobi (Japan) University (9.473).

“I thought the dance team did amazing in both competitions,” said Sarah Barland-Flisowski, spirit coordinator. “The team had to come back and compete in the Pom Division an hour after placing second in the Team Performance and did a great job of regrouping.”

The Blinn Foundation supports programs and activities that enhance the quality of education for Blinn College students and expand the educational opportunities for the entire community. While raising funds is an important function, the Foundation also seeks to heighten community awareness of the mission and accomplishments of the College and to promote excellence in education.

Since its inception in 2000, the Foundation has raised funds to purchase classroom equipment and supplies, and help launch major construction projects across Blinn’s campuses.
