BLINN FRESHMAN NAMED TEXAS JUNIOR STUDENT GOVERNMENT SECRETARY

A Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus student will serve as the state secretary of the Texas Junior College Student Government Association (TJCSGA).

The Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus Student Government Association (SGA) was elected TJSGA state secretary at the state convention in Houston and selected freshman Zachary Taylor (Loma Linda, Calif.) to serve in the position for one calendar year. Taylor is treasurer for the Blinn-Schulenburg SGA.

“I have always had a passion for helping students have a voice,” Taylor said. “I am excited to use my platform as TJCSGA state secretary to motivate students to be more active in their school and to become more unified.”

The Blinn-Brenham SGA was awarded the ‘Most Professional School’ at the 2017 TJCSGA State Convention, an honor given to campuses that demonstrate professional appearance and behavior throughout the conference. Lane King, Blinn-Bryan Campus Coordinator of Student Activities and SGA Advisor, was elected to serve as State Advisor Elect through the 2018-19 calendar year.

“Participation in student government allows students to take ownership not only in their institution, but at the regional and state level as well,” Dean of Student Success Dr. Jeremy Thomas said. “Although each of Blinn’s four SGAs are considered a separate organization by TJCSGA, I am very proud of the way they came together during the convention as one College to provide assistance and support for one another.”

Blinn-Brenham freshman Tristain Mathews (Houston) will serve as the Region IV Parliamentarian for the 2017-18 calendar year. Tiffany Turner, Blinn-Brenham Coordinator of Student Activities and SGA advisor, assumed the position of Region IV Advisor Elect for the next two calendar years.

“I am thrilled to serve as parliamentarian for the Blinn-Brenham SGA and to represent the College at the regional level as well,” Mathews said. “This will be great opportunity for me to learn more about the inner workings of student government and how I can better serve my fellow students.”

Blinn’s SGA serves as a liaison between Blinn students and College administrators, represents the voice of the campus student body, and makes improvements in all areas of campus life. SGA fosters community by hosting beneficial educational and recreational student activities and collaborating with Blinn’s Office of Student Leadership & Activities to support and oversee all campus clubs and organizations.

The Texas Junior College Student Government Association is the only student-maintained organization in the state that works to promote the cause of community college students at the local, regional, state, and national level. It is comprised of more than 72 member colleges across Texas.
