BLINN HONOR STUDENT EARNS COCA-COLA LEADERS OF PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP

Kayli Burton awarded $1,000 merit scholarship toward associate degree education

Kayli Burton smallA Blinn College honor student has been selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship as a 2015 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar.

A member of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society, Kayli Burton of Bryan was one of 207 PTK students selected from more than 1,100 applicants nationwide. Independent judges evaluated the applications on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential.

“It is proof that hard work pays off,” Burton said. “I consider it a reward for working hard my freshman year.”

The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program provides new PTK members with financial resources to help defray expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in chapter programs.

Burton was homeschooled and earned her high school diploma in 2014. She knew Blinn’s small class sizes and proximity to home would make it the perfect springboard for a bachelor degree education.

“Blinn is a good fit for me,” she said. “My professors know me by name, and the subjects I was scared of, like math, turned out to be fun.”

Burton will apply the scholarship toward Spring semester courses. The oldest of four children, Burton hopes the scholarship will assist her family and inspire her siblings, ages 16, 11 and 9, to pursue higher education. In her scholarship application, Burton wrote about the importance of setting an example for others.

“Every day is a leadership opportunity when you grow up with siblings,” Burton said. “They are going to pick up on how I respond to situations and problems, whether my reaction is positive or negative. I think this can be applied in a broader sense, too; attitude effects leadership. You can be a leader, even if you aren’t the boss.”

Burton hopes to transfer to Texas A&M University this Fall to earn a degree in business management and transform her passion for photography into a small business.
