Former Texas House Speaker has made a lasting impact upon the Blinn College District

Gus Mutschert

During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Blinn College District Board of Trustees recognized former Texas Speaker of the House Gus Mutscher with a resolution thanking him for his years of service to Blinn College and the State of Texas.

A two-year baseball letterman, student body president, and a member of the state championship debate team during his Blinn College days, Mutscher won election to the Texas House of Representatives in 1960. He served as Speaker of the House from 1969 until 1972.

Mutscher was instrumental in establishing the Star of the Republic Museum at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. He introduced a bill that appropriated $800,000 for its construction, and in 1969 sponsored House Bill 634 of the 61st Texas Legislature transferring ownership of the museum to Blinn College.

Mutscher served as Washington County Judge from 1976 until 1990, and worked at Blinn College and the Blinn College Foundation from 1998 until January 2018. Among his many contributions, he helped to establish the Blinn College Alumni and Friends Association and the Hall of Honor.

In recognition of his many accomplishments, he was named the Blinn College Athletic Department Buccaneer Backer of the Year in 2014 and the Alumni and Friends Person of the Year in 2017.

In other business, the board authorized the purchase of technology, audiovisual, and laboratory equipment for installation at the Walter C. Schwartz Building at the RELLIS Campus, and authorized the contract for Phase 3 landscaping improvements to the Blinn-Bryan Campus. The third phase of the Bryan Campus landscaping project will improve the landscaping, lighting, and seating in the courtyard located in front of the campus library.
