BLINN INVITES COMMUNITY TO JOIN IN CELEBRATING CHAMPIONSHIP STUDENTS

Blinn College is inviting the community to join it in celebrating its cheer, dance and livestock judging national championships.

Blinn will host a reception honoring its championship students from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in the Blinn-Brenham campus Student Center’s Janis Sneed Banquet Room. The Blinn College Foundation is sponsoring the reception and will collect donations for national championship rings for the cheer and dance teams.

Earlier this month, cheer and dance each repeated as national champions, winning the NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The dance team scored 9.268 out of a possible 10 points in the finals, while cheer scored 93.18 out of a possible 100 points.

“We knew that we had to come back even better than the year before,” said Courtney Prinzel (Atascocita), a dance team captain. “I always gave 110 percent so that everyone else on the team would see that and do the same.”

Sarah Barland Flisowski is Blinn’s spirit coordinator and head dance coach, and Michael Brewster is head cheer coach.

“Without Coach Brewster, we would not have been able to have success,” sophomore cheerleader Marissa Lemmons said. “He is a very emotional coach, so he really connects with us throughout the year.”

Blinn’s livestock judging team placed first in three of the four national events, winning the Houston, Kansas City and Denver championships and placing second at Louisville.

“These kids have worked hard and deserve all that they have received,” coach Brice Mund said. “As coaches, we couldn’t be more pleased with their success, but I am more proud of the people they have become.”

Coaches Joe Rathmann and Mund were named national coaches of the year. Payton Warmke (Brenham), Brody Halfmann (Garden City), Quest Newberry (George West) and Chama Martin (Mason) were named to the Livestock Judging All-America team, giving Blinn more honorees than any other school in the nation.

“I think our success comes from practicing all the time and the support of our coaches,” said Warmke, a sophomore who plans to transfer to Texas A&M University in the fall. “There is definitely pressure that comes with it because you put a target on your back after winning the first national competition.”

Blinn’s Agricultural Sciences Program is one of the largest in the nation with almost 800 students enrolled – roughly four times the size of any other two-year agricultural program in the state. Blinn offers agriculture classes on all its campuses, with the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex serving as the program’s hub. In addition to its excellence in the classroom, Blinn offers extracurricular educational activities in the areas of livestock judging, agriculture club, wildlife, agriculture mechanics, horticulture and agriculture sciences.

  1. I could not be a more proud parent. The dance team won Nationals! You girls and Coach Barlan earned it!! I watched all the other teams that performed and it took alot of hard work and heart to do what you girls did!! I have been wanting to send a letter to Blinn in regards to a moment I observed while attending the National ADTS competition in Denton prior to Nationals. The Blinn dance team showed some of the Best sportsman like conduct I have ever seen in a group of young adults. They cheered for every team that performed against them and complimented the teams individually as they finished their performance. I was truly blown away and amazed at the excellent conduct and the way these girls blessed the other competing teams. My hat off to Coach Barland for training inspiring these girls to make such a bold effort that does not go unnoticed! Proud Mother, Ashley Naylor
