BLINN: “NO GUNS ON CAMPUS THIS YEAR”

Campus Carry law does not take effect for community colleges until August 1, 2017

Blinn College is reminding students and campus visitors that Senate Bill 11 – commonly known as the “Campus Carry” law – applies only to public, four-year universities and that firearms will not be allowed at any Blinn College location until August 1, 2017.

Until Senate Bill 11 goes into effect for community colleges on that date, firearms are not permitted at any Blinn College location regardless of whether they are carried openly or concealed, or whether the individual has a concealed handgun license.

Anyone who sees an individual carrying a firearm at Blinn is advised to call 911 so police can make contact with the individual.

“We want all students and campus visitors to be aware that while four-year universities such as Texas A&M will allow concealed handgun license holders to carry firearms beginning this August, no firearms will be allowed at Blinn College until August 2017,” said Craig Wiesepape, Blinn College Chief of Police.

Blinn has already begun planning its campus carry implementation process. To gather input from campus constituencies, including faculty, staff and students, Blinn is developing a Campus Carry Task Force that will provide input regarding reasonable rules for restricted zones on campus. Dr. Mary Hensley, District President/CEO, will then establish rules and present them to the Board of Trustees for review and adoption.

Per Senate Bill 11, Blinn will submit a report to the legislature describing its rules, regulations and other provisions regarding concealed carry in advance of the August 1, 2017 implementation deadline.

  1. Unfortunately, the task force is probably going to be made up of all those male faculty who are anxious to carry a gun around. What Blinn people don’t get or understand is that school shooters prepare for months and months studying where the most potential victims will be at what times and WHO is carrying a gun. That means that school shooters will either shoot faculty who are carrying a gun first or go for individuals who aren’t carrying a gun. Many people who have a CHL don’t practice enough to even be good shots or carry the cheapest kind of gun they can find. Proper guns, regular visits to the gun range, and bullets for practice are expensive.
What a mess. The legislature should have given the schools more money for police.

    1. You obviously don’t know many CHL holders. They are pretty good shots. I’ve seen enough of them to tell you they can shoot well enough to stop someone from killing them.

      1. You may be right for the group of CHL holders you hang around with. But if a newbie to guns gets a CHL, he or she might not be a good match with a .22 pistol against an assault rifle.
I personally think that Blinn build a shooting range for employees to use free of charge and run by people like you who apparently know what they are doing.

        1. I would stop while you can. The babble is totally inaccurate. First, to even get a CHL you have to pass a target test. It is not that easy. Second, no CHL is carrying around a .22 unless they plan on just antagonizing the aggressor. Please just stop talking when you have no idea or incorrect information

          1. You make some interesting points. I suggest you go to any Internet search engine and look up “how many people in Texas fail the CHL test each year” and read some of the blogs. It is a fairly easy shooting test, especially if you have good equipment. Getting a CHL is no garrantee that the person will have good equipment or will practice. And very few handguns are going to be a match for an assault weapon.
Allowing people to carry a gun on a college campus, will make people feel safer, but will it make them safer?

  2. There are shooting incidents on the Brenham campus without open carry being allowed. What will be different in 2017, more incidents with firearms? Oh, wait if you allow licensed carry, then all the incidents with shootings on campus will go away. Is Blinn planning to change admissions policy to exclude the inner city kids with drug problems and gang affiliations? Just curious.
