BLINN PHI THETA KAPPA INDUCTS 40 NEW MEMBERS

Brenham’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Beta Alpha, inducted 40 members into its organization Tuesday night in a ceremony at the College’s Student Center.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is recognized as the official honor society for two-year colleges by the American Association of Community Colleges.  Founded in 1918, PTK promotes scholarship, leadership service and fellowship among its members. To be accepted into the program, students much carry at least a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) with at least 12 transferable hours. Blinn’s Beta Alpha chapter currently has more than 100 members.

“Truly, membership in Phi Theta Kappa is a worthy accomplishment,” said Blinn PTK Advisor Lisa Wall. “It’s a feat that members can point to with pride, both during their college years and afterwards.”

Blinn’s academic transfer rate is the highest in the state and more than 20 percent higher than the state average. Its Transfer Enrollment at Texas A&M (TEAM) Program, a unique co-enrollment program that allows hundreds of additional students to qualify for Texas A&M’s freshman class each year, recently received the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s “Recognition of Excellence.”

The College was also named one of the top community colleges in the state by Schools.com for its positive impact on the Texas economy, and AffordableCollegesOnline.org recently listed Blinn among the most affordable large community colleges in the nation.

Blinn enrolled 18,413 students this Fall and has experienced 31.1 percent growth since 2006. Founded in 1883, the College’s tuition and fees average about one-third the cost of the same classes at most four-year public universities in the state. In addition to its campuses in Brenham, Bryan, Schulenburg and Sealy, the College teaches online courses, dual credit for high school and prepares students for quick employment through its career and technical certification programs.
