BLINN PREPARES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE LIFE

  

Blinn College recently gave 85 high school students tips on how to handle those responsibilities and get the most from their college experience during the College & Career Summit hosted on the College’s Brenham campus.

Students received help in preparing financially for college and received detailed information outlining just how much students can expect college to cost.

One break-out session compared the structure of high school life to the freedom of college, and offered tips for adjusting and thriving in this new environment. Students also took part in a career planning session where they had the opportunity to fill out questionnaires online to find out what type of career they would be interested in. This was followed with a presentation on the different careers and the education it takes to enter that field.

Sam Houston State University and the University of Houston each had representatives at the summit to speak with students, and various Blinn College departments were on hand to describe their programs.

Dustin Schneider, a student from Waller High School, plans to attend Blinn and found many things from the summit that should be able to help him prepare for college. Schneider would like to study business and someday open his own business, he said.

“College is very different from high school and I am excited to start,” Schneider said.

The summit also included a “Watch UR BAC” driving simulator that demonstrated the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.  The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service gave students statistics and penalties for driving under the influence.

“Our goal for the event was to promote college in general,” said Prospective Student Advisor Kristin Klussmann. “We wanted to give them an idea between the differences in college and high school.”
