BLINN PROFESSOR SELECTED AS KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE

A Blinn College professor has been selected as the keynote speaker at the 2017 American Association of Adjunct Education (AAAE) Conference in Austin.

An educator for 30 years, Education Professor Essie Childers will speak about the importance of creativity and diversity in the classroom on Friday, February 24, at the Renaissance Austin Hotel. AAAE, which provides professional development to adjunct and part-time college faculty across the country, is partnering with the Texas Community College Teachers Association (TCCTA) to host its annual conference in conjunction with the 70th Annual TCCTA Convention.

Dr. Brenda Meloncon, an alumna of Blinn College, is President of AAAE.

To reflect this year’s conference theme, “Creativity and Diversity in Education,” Childers will present a variety of methods instructors can use to create opportunities for students to feel comfortable in the classroom.

“After conducting research on the types of curriculum we present and the types of assignments we give our students, I wondered if we really are giving them the opportunity to reflect what they are familiar with,” Childers said. “Students should have the opportunity to choose how they present their ideas, so we can celebrate and appreciate diversity in the classroom.”

The 2017 AAAE Conference marks the second time Childers has been chosen to be a presenter. In 2013, she gave a presentation describing how faculty can energize and rekindle their teaching in the classroom through innovative active learning strategies.

Childers is a graduate of Abilene Christian University and the University of Texas at Tyler. She is the immediate past president of the TCCTA, and the winner of the 2014 College Reading and Learning Association’s (CRLA) Distinguished Teaching Award, the 2014 Outstanding Service Award from the Blinn Professional Association (BPA), and the 2013 On Course Ambassador of the Year Award. Childers serves on Blinn’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Development Team and is one of the first graduates of the College’s FutureWorks Academy.

“I felt so honored the AAAE chose me to speak at the conference,” she said. “It is important to raise awareness about creativity and diversity in the classroom.”

Registration for Blinn’s 8-week Spring courses is open through March 8. For enrollment information and to learn about financial aid opportunities, visit: www.blinn.edu.
