BLINN-SCHULENBURG HELPS MAN KEEP 27-YEAR-OLD PROMISE TO HIS MOTHER

When Stuart Mica joined the military in 1989, he made a single promise to his mother, pledging that when his military service was complete, he would go to college and earn a degree.

After 22 years in the military, four tours in Iraq, and overseas service in Germany and Korea, Mica is back home in Flatonia. Thanks to the Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus, he is keeping that promise to his mother.

That commitment to education recently earned Mica recognition as Blinn College’s October 2016 Academic Transfer Student of the Month.

Mica says his mother didn’t get to go to college because she grew up in the ’50s and women weren’t really invited to participate in higher education. He says that she went to a business school and learned to be a secretary, and back then that was about the best she could do. However he says she instilled in him that school was important and that you should always better yourself, and one of the ways to do that is by getting your education.

Now retired from the military after serving as a 19 Delta reconnaissance scout and reaching the rank of Sergeant First Class promotable, Mica takes courses part-time. He plans to earn his associate degree within the next year and a half, then transfer to the University of Houston-Victoria to earn his business degree.

Mica balances his academic responsibilities with a variety of community leadership positions. He serves as president of the Rotary Club of Flatonia and the Flatonia Chamber of Commerce, and vice president of the Lion’s Club. He also serves on the board of the Flatonia ISD Education Foundation, and belongs to the American Legion of Flatonia and the Fayette County Tourist Association.

Brian Cravens, a Government Professor, says Mica possesses a strong academic and intellectual drive and always seeks out multiple perspectives in his writing.  He went on to say that as a non-traditional student, Mica consistently has shown that although balancing academic responsibilities with outside commitments can be challenging, it can be successfully accomplished through determined focus, good time management skills, and a willingness to use the resources available at Blinn College.

Mica said his Blinn education has been an asset in serving his community. He specifically pointed to two English courses that helped him utilize proper formatting and verbiage in the letters he writes as president of the Chamber of Commerce.

Mica says he thinks the Schulenburg Campus is a great asset because it’s affordable for families and provides a high-grade education.

In addition to its academic transfer courses, Blinn-Schulenburg offers a variety of career and technical as well as continuing education courses. For information on course offerings and student registration, visit: www.blinn.edu or call 979-743-5200.
