Sawyer Yandell has been lifting a lot more than his books lately. The Blinn College sophomore recently took first place at a collegiate powerlifting competition in Austin, Texas, breaking three American records in the process.

At the Longhorn Open held at the University of Texas in Austin, Yandell placed first in the 148-pound raw division. In the raw division, competitors are only allowed to use a lifting belt during competition.

“This is my first meet of the year and I wanted to ease my way into the season,” Yandell said.

Yandell set new weight-division records in the squat, dead lift and total weight lifted, clearing 453 pounds on his squat, 502 pounds on his dead lift and 231 pounds on the bench press for a total of 1,186 pounds.

Yandell has his sights set on winning the 2015 Collegiate Powerlifting Nationals coming up in April in Atlanta, and earning a spot on the world power lifting team. The sophomore took seventh last year at collegiate nationals and believes he could capture the title this year.

As an individual competitor, Yandell pays his own way to competitions and estimates that the trip to nationals will cost about $1,000 and a trip with the world team would be twice as much. He hopes to obtain a sponsorship to defray his travel costs.

Yandell plans to attend Texas State University in San Marcos with aspirations of becoming a powerlifting and football coach.
