BLINN THEATRE ARTS PROGRAM FINAL PLAY OF SEASON

The Blinn College-Brenham Theatre Arts Program will conclude the 2014-15 season with a play based upon Holocaust survivor Raja Englanderova’s childhood experiences in the Theresienstadt concentration camp.

“I Never Saw Another Butterfly” will run at 7 p.m. April 9-10 at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center’s MRW Studio Theatre in Brenham. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased online at www.blinn.edu.boxoffice, by calling 979-830-4024 or by emailing boxoffice@blinn.edu.

During World War II, 15,000 Jewish children were sent by the Nazi Gestapo to Theresienstadt, a concentration camp used as a stopping place for children and adults on their way to the gas chambers.

When the camp was liberated, the writings and artwork of the children was gathered in a book titled, “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.” Using the book, Celeste Raspanti wrote the play version centered around Englanderova.

The performances will also include two original works by returning Blinn students Kayla Kelly (Humble) and Gabriel Arias (Hempstead). Kelly will present “The Exhibit,” a collection of Holocaust poems, while Arias will present “Abel,” a story based on true events that took place during World War II.

“Our students have put in a lot of work researching the information to fully understand what children went through during the Holocaust,” said Bradley Nies, Brenham campus theatre director.

“I Never Saw Another Butterfly” is part of the Butterfly Project, a collaborative project within the Division of Visual & Performing Arts that included a presentation from guest speaker and Holocaust survivor Lili Gordon about her experiences during and after World War II.

“People that attend the performance will hopefully get a better understanding of the Holocaust and how it affected children,” Nies said.

The Blinn theatre arts programs on the Brenham and Bryan campuses host at least eight performances each year on its Brenham and Bryan campuses and offers a quality educational foundation through study, application and experience.
