BLINN TRUSTEES ELECT NEW BOARD OFFICERS, UPDATE STRATEGIC PLAN
The Blinn College Board of Trustees looked ahead to a bright future during its regular meeting Tuesday, electing new board officers and approving the College’s new mission, vision, core values, and goals.
Shortly after the meeting was called to order, Precinct 2 representative Douglas Borchardt and Precinct 3 representative Teddy Boehm were sworn in to serve six-year terms, and At-Large Position 1 representative Charles Moser was sworn in to complete the remaining two years of an unexpired term. Borchardt, Boehm, and Moser each were unopposed in seeking re-election to the board.
The trustees then elected Charles Moser president, Richard Powell vice president, and David Sommer secretary. All three serve two-year terms as board officers through May 2019.
Appointed to the Blinn Board of Trustees in 2015, Moser served as Editor and Publisher of the Brenham Banner-Press from 1970-2010. He has served as Director and President of the Texas Daily Newspaper Association (TDNA) and Director of the Texas Press Association, and has been a recipient of the Frank Mayborn Award for Community Leadership from TDNA and the Lifetime Achievement in Print Journalism Award from Sam Houston State’s School of Mass Communication.
A retired attorney, Powell has served on the board since 2014. Sommer, a Blinn honors graduate, has served on the board since 2011, including the past two years as board president. In appreciation of Sommer’s devoted service and outstanding leadership, Moser presented him with a plaque Tuesday on behalf of the College.
In other business, the board approved an updated strategic plan for 2017-2020. The new mission statement, vision statement, core values, and goals were developed with community input by a working group comprised of faculty, staff and administrators.
The new mission statement is, “Blinn College is building stronger communities by providing quality comprehensive education and empowering students to achieve excellence in their educational careers and personal goals.” The new vision is, “Shaping future academic, workforce, cultural, and economic leaders by providing excellent instruction, resources, services, and innovative partnerships for students and the community.”
Blinn’s new core values are access, collaboration, diversity, excellence, innovation, respect, and service. The approved goals are student success, performance excellence, and planned growth.
Even as it looked toward the future, the board also recognized the past, adopting a resolution in honor of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce’s 100th anniversary. The resolution celebrates the Chamber’s proud history promoting a positive economic impact and quality of life in Washington County while providing support for new and existing businesses, visitors and tourists, current and relocating residents to the area, and the general public. The Chamber actively has supported Blinn College through countless examples of promotion, partnership, and advocacy. That support that has contributed immensely to the growth, strength, and prosperity of Blinn College and the local business community.
The board also authorized the College to negotiate, award, and execute a professional services agreement with Aestimo, Inc. for construction phase services related to facade repairs to the Brenham Campus Student Center and Academic Building.
