BLINN WELCOMES 16 STUDENTS INTO NURSING HONOR SOCIETY

The Blinn College – Bryan campus chapter of Alpha Delta Nu welcomed 16 new members Friday in its first Fall induction ceremony at the College’s Health Science Center campus.

Alpha Delta Nu is the official honor society of the National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (N-OADN) and the leading advocate dedicated to enhancing the quality of associate degree nursing education, strengthening the professional role of associate degree nurses and promoting the futures of associate degree nurses in the midst of healthcare changes.

Blinn’s Beta Sigma chapter was the second Alpha Delta Nu chapter to incorporate in Texas. Members must carry at least a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) and sponsor one community education or recruitment project.

This semester’s inductees compiled a capstone project titled, “No Minor Problem” to educate the community and provide teachers and administrators with information about adolescent drug use in local high schools. Nursing students developed a survey and worked closely with district administrators to distribute questionnaires to high school students who could choose whether to complete them and could do so anonymously. Nursing students compiled survey results, compared them to national research and presented their findings to school officials.

“The students have really set the bar high this year,” said advisor Darla Forsberg. “I’m just so impressed at how they’ve grown and worked together.”

The project—a culmination of several months of hard work amidst regular coursework—was selected as one of five student projects from across the nation to be presented at the N-OADN 2014 Convention in St. Louis Nov. 14-16.

“It was such an honor to be selected to present our project,” said Amanda Jordan, Alpha Delta Nu vice president. “We put in a lot of work outside of our normal course requirements and it’s really rewarding to be recognized for it. The opportunity to present, network and learn from educators in the field was phenomenal.”

Inductees include: Kelly Conrad (Bryan), Shanna Fannon (Carlsbad), Michelle Feldtman (Bellville), Courtney Garret (Bryan), Jennifer Gillen (Richmond), Nicole Grande (Corpus Christi), Sissy Johnson (Wills Point), Amanda Jordan (Buffalo, NY), Cristina Lerma (Mercedes), Vanessa Maupin (Weimar), Joshua Miller (New Orleans, La.), Stephanie Moore (College Station), Jannah Platt (Lockhart), Megan Stewart (Montgomery), Josh Templeton (Beaumont) and Jessica Waller (Longview).

Blinn’s Division of Health Sciences, based at the Texas A&M Health Science Center, offers associate degree nursing, dental hygiene, emergency medical services, physical therapist assistant, radiologic technology, fire science, therapeutics manufacturing, veterinary technology and vocational nursing programs designed to train students for high-demand professions.
