BRAZOS RIVER AUTHORITY TO LIMIT WATER SALES

Brazos River Authority Directors have voted and approved a resolution which would limit some water sales next year, dependent on an easing of drought conditions.

The City of Brenham receives its water from Lake Somerville under a long-term contract with the Authority.

Directors moved to limit the sale of “interruptible water” in 2015. Interruptible water is water not being used in previous years, and supplies from reservoirs in the BRS system, and is not sold on a long-term basis.

The BRA action means no new interruptible contracts will be established unless drought conditions improve, but the action allows the BRA’s general manager and CEO to make up to 43,569 acre-feet of interruptible water available in 2015 for existing agreements with terms that continue beyond December 31, 2014. Any new or amended  interruptible water agreements will expire on December 31, 2015.

If drought conditions improve within the basin, uninterruptible water would possible be made available only if storage capacity rises above the stage one drought watch trigger in the BRA’s plan.
