BRAZOS RIVER FLOODING

Heavy rains from Hurricane Harvey are expected to have a big impact on river levels early next week.

The Brazos River Authority is predicting that the Brazos River will peak well above flood stage downstream from the Brenham area on Tuesday and Wednesday.  In Richmond, the Brazos is expected to peak at 51 ½ feet by Tuesday, more than six feet above flood stage and 37 feet higher than its current level of 14 feet.  In Rosharon, the Brazos could rise to 52 feet by Sunday, 9 feet above flood stage and 34 feet above its current level.

Closer to home near Hempstead, the Brazos is expected to peak at 30 feet by Wednesday.  Flood stage is 50 feet, and it is currently below 12 feet.

Areas toward the Texas coast, such as Brazoria County, are expected to be most affected by river flooding later this week.

  1. What is the recorded high of the Brazos River measured in Brazoria, Tx in the May 2016 flood, please?

  2. Is it flooded in river edge sub division. If not, what are the expectations and when

    1. This is my opinion, based on my experience of living 56 years in Brazoria County and active flood survey of Angleton, Lake Jackson, Brazoria, West Columbia, Freeport and areas in between. Yes the levee system for Angleton, Texas is very likely to be topped by the resulting Brazos River flooding from hurricane Harvey. The highest known water level in the area of Angleton, Texas will be exceeded by the current Brazos River flood surge that will occur Monday 8-28-2017 through Sunday 9-3-2017. The exact true levels are in unknown, uncharted amounts over a huge area of the state. This level of water (all at once) from the entire Brazos River Basin will be historic, and all the areas north of Angleton will flood down the Brazos River at NEW HISTORIC FLOOD LEVELS. This much severe rain, over this many days in a row, over a vast new recorded area…all at once…is the unknown for it’s effect this far downstream in Angleton, Texas. The storm has flooded entire Texas areas from the Dallas/Fort Worth through…Waco…Temple…College Station…Katy…Rosenberg…Rosharon…Angleton and Lake Jackson and this Brazos Valley water shed is seeing water levels in extreme historic measure. This adds to the unknown effect on area flooding in Angleton this far downstream. The shear volume of water in the broad West Houston area (having unheard of effects there now) that is draining back towards Angleton, is MANY TIMES more than ever recorded. The effects will be more severe than ever before…this time. We have seen the levee system WEST of Angleton almost topped by storm system rains …that were much less than this Harvey Flood Event has created. This in my opinion, means the Angleton levee system will be topped in the days ahead. The full effect on the City of Angleton as the levee overflows into the City…is unknown. Be careful, and watchful in the days ahead.
