23 year old Eric Alcala was sentenced by Judge Reva Towslee-Corbett Friday afternoon to 15 years in prison for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child, a first degree felony.  Alcala plead guilty to the charge on November 3, and requested the Court assess punishment after hearing evidence.

Alcala was arrested after an investigation by the Brenham Police Department revealed that from October 2015 through January of 2016, Alcala maintained a sexual relationship with a 13 year old female.  The evidence showed that Alcala would pick the child up from her home and take her to his home or a local motel to engage in sexual activity.

During the punishment hearing testimony was presented from the investigating officer and the victim’s father, as well as Alcala’s boss, mother, and sister.  Alcala also testified on his own behalf.  The defense asked for mercy on behalf of their young client and a sentence of probation.  Assistant District Attorney Lauren Haevischer asked for mercy and justice on behalf of “an even younger victim,” and requested the court sentence Alcala to 25 years.

Prior to announcing the sentence, Judge Corbett explained to Alcala, “This isn’t a case where I can give you probation.”

After the sentence was pronounced Haevischer reiterated the victim’s father’s testimony, “She has scars that will never heal.  No child should have to go through what she did.  No punishment will ever make her whole, but perhaps a first time offender heading to prison for 15 years will prevent at least one future offense.”  Asked about the sentence District Attorney Julie Renken commented, “I’m proud of Lauren and the Brenham Police Department.  These cases take a toll on everyone involved, but sending a sex offender to prison makes it all worth it for us.”
