BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL CHOOSES ANIMAL SHELTER SITE

The Brenham City Council chose a location next to the Brenham Police Station as the site for the new animal shelter.

Police Chief Rex Phelps told the Council at today’s (Thursday’s) meeting that the animal shelter task force reviewed this site and an optional site, near the dog park and the Connie Clinic and found the site near the police station and the industrial area was best.

Phelps said since the police department is in charge of animal control and the infrastructure is already there, the proposed new shelter should be close to them.

Phelps told the council that the most important thing is that the infrastructure is ready. He did however, thank the Animal Friends of Washington County which he said was generous.

Susan Cantey of the Animal Friends however, asked to be ‘a lone voice in the wilderness’ favoring the highway 36 north site.  She noted to the council that Brenham is known for its ‘bucolic’ and friendly environment and the site on highway 36 fits that description the best.  Cantey also said young people would be enticed to come out to that area and adopt a pet, which is the goal.  She said the area near the police station is not friendly to dogs.

Again, members of the City Council thought the offer was a good one, the best option, by a unanimous vote was the police station site.

The city administration, and animal activists all concur the current animal shelter on Old Chappell Hill Road has long since outlived its usefulness.

  1. This is a terrible place for the shelter….How about across the street from where the shelter is now? That would be a perfect place

  2. When our city has a wonderful place like Animal Friends, why would they not take advantage of that opportunity? Very sad!

  3. While this is all good a new shelter I am not sure that this was the right decision next to the police dept. I guess Phelps needs to micro manage the shelter also like he does the police dept. this site was originally for the new FD now I guess we are going to be looking at BUYING more property for the new FD substation and here we go again with another increase in taxes. These city officials and city manager all need to stop and think they work for the citizens and as citizens we are tired of taxes going up every year! I have owned my house only ten years and in that ten years my taxes have gone up over $1000.00 this is ridiculous at this rate I will not be able to afford my taxes or
My home much longer!!!!! Enough of the spending and taxing city folks!!!!!!

  4. I agree with Mrs Cantey. I think next to the police station is a stupid place! Come on Brenham we are better than this!
