BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSES NEW STOP SIGNS

The Brenham City Council discussed the possible placements of stops signs at the intersection of S. Chappell Hill and Neibuhr Street during their meeting today (Thursday).

During a work session, the council heard from Public Works Director Dane Rau who said the City of Brenham has received numerous concerns over the limited visibility and safety at the intersection. In November of 2016, city staff received a petition of approximately 400 signatures requesting the city to consider placing additional stop signs at the intersection.

The discussion was opened to the public and Mark Groves, the pastor at nearby Christ Lutheran Church and a resident of the area, spoke about his experience at the intersection:

As the work session came to a close, the council said they would move forward in putting temporary stop signs at the intersection. Brenham Police Chief Craig Goodman said with the temporary signs, they could monitor traffic and conduct data research to determine whether permanent signs could be a solution to the problem.

During the regular session, the council approved a one year contract with LJ Power for $9,800 for the generator maintenance and inspections for various city facilities. The new contract means the city is saving $1800 compared to the previous contract.

In other business the council:

  • Approved a ground lease agreement with Bob Handley for hangar space at the Brenham Municipal Airport
  • Approved an ordinance on its first reading which authorizes a variance to design standard requirements on a tract of land located at 1118 West Main Street

The council passed on the discussion of a series of professional services agreements related to the May 2016 storm recovery effort. The agreements are still in discussion and will be addressed at another upcoming council meeting.
