BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO DISCUSS WATER TREATMENT PLANT REHAB

The Brenham City Council will meet on Thursday to discuss two items pertaining to the water treatment plant rehabilitation.City Council 3-5-15

The City Council will consider a resolution expressing intent to reimburse certain costs related to the water treatment plant rehab. Certificates of Obligation were discussed in budget workshops, and included in this was the water treatment plant rehabilitation and protective coatings project for $677,000. The City would like to begin work in the next six to eight weeks on these planned improvements. In order to issue purchase orders for this project, the Council must approve the reimbursement resolution to declare reimbursement of certain costs related to the capital expenditures from the issuance of Certificates of Obligation to be repaid thru water rates.

The City Council will then go on to consider bids for the water treatment plant rehab. Six bids were received for this project. The low bidder, Hydro Concrete Tank Solutions of TX, LLC, has been recommended by O’Malley Strand. The bid plus all of the additive alternate bids came in at $357,400.

The City Council will also act on the first reading pertaining to the annual repeating of updated service credits and an increase in retirement annuities in the Texas Municipal Retirement System. For many years, City Council has approved, on an annual basis, an ordinance providing for updated service credit (USC) and an increase in retirement annuities as provided through the Texas Municipal Retirement System. If this ordinance is adopted, the city will not have to adopt an ordinance each year to reauthorize calculation of these benefits.

In other business, the Council will consider a purchase related to the emergency repairs to the raw water intake pump at Lake Somerville; an agreement with TxDOT for a temporary closure of roads for the 2016 Christmas Stroll; and a request from Washington County Appraisal District for the disaster reappraisal resulting from the May 2016 flood.

The Brenham City Council will meet on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the second floor council chambers of City Hall.

  1. For all of the years past and the 15+ years under present city manager Roberts, city council has had a formal approval of increase in retirement annuities. Now an ordinance is being presented to create a revolving door to have the the annual increase in retirement annuities automatically. Why wasn’t this done sooner? Why is it being done now when city manager Roberts is planning to retire ?

  2. Im more concerned about what will be in this coating they plan to use.and could that potentially contaminate our water supply?

  3. If certain Brenham based businesses that send large amounts of extremely oily, greasy waste water into the sewage system every day were fairly charged for sewer fees accordingly, this expenditure may not be necessary. Sewer fees are based on water consumption, but if business owned well water is used by the business(Approved by city) then only minimum fees are charged. This hard to treat water is an expensive undertaking for water treatment facilities and once again, the homeowners feel the bite for increased taxes to pay the loan.( another word for “certificates of obligation).

    1. Your statement may be true if they were talking about the WASTEWATER treatment plant. What I read says the WATER treatment plant. City of Brenham water comes from Lake Somerville and goes through the WATER treatment plant to be suitable for drinking.. The WASTEWATER plant treats the sewer water from around the city, from city water or private wells… BUT I fell the council should consider the improvements of any water or wastewater facility BEFORE any pay raise is given or $150,000 of lawnmowers are purchased.. Every citizen of the city that is available at 1pm on Thursday should attend this meeting to show their disapproval of how the council is wastefully spending money.. Somewhere somehow their has to be an end to this. IF Mr. Roberts is going to be paid the amount stated in lasts weeks news, he dang sure needs to work for his money.
