BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO HEAR FROM FIRE CHIEF THIS AFTERNOON

Firefighters and guns will both be discussed when the Brenham City Council meets this (Thursday) afternoon.

The City Council will hold a work session with Fire Chief Ricky Boeker.

In a memo to the council, Chief Boeker says that the department is facing a critical shortage of Command Staff.  Several retirements and resignations have left the Brenham Fire Department with fewer command level personal to respond to fires and rescues.

Boeker says that it is time to reconsider positions and responsibilities.

The City Council will also discuss and likely vote on revising the city’s current policy manual reflecting the passage of the state’s new Open Carry Law.

Current policy prohibits possession of any firearm on city property.

City officials are proposing changing the language to allow employees licensed to carry and possess firearms to keep them in a locked, privately owned vehicle on city property.

Also at today’s (Thursday) meeting:

The City Council is expected to approve submission of a grant for security cameras for the Brenham Municipal Airport.

And, formally accept a $38,000 grant from the 100 Club of Houston for vests and protective gear for the Emergency Response Team.

The City Council is set to meet this (Thursday) afternoon at 1:00 at the City Hall on West Vulcan Street.
