BRENHAM COUNCIL APPROVES BUDGET, TAX RATE

The Brenham City Council has approved the 2015-16 budget and tax rate.

The council members, Monday morning, voted six-to-one to approve a $70.4 million budget, with long-time Councilman Danny Goss casting the lone dissenting vote.

The council unanimously adopted a proposed tax rate of 47.31-cents per $100 valuation – nearly two-cents lower than the current rate of 49.12 cents.

Despite a reduction in the rate, due to an increase in property values, the proposed tax will raise an additional $207,149 in revenues.

The tax includes 29.5 cents for maintenance and operations, and 17.81 cents for debt service.

The council also voted to renew the city’s group health coverage.

City Personnel Manager Janie Mehrens told the council that some changes by the Texas Municipal League will reduce costs but will also reduce some of the benefits.

The individual deduction will increase from $600 to $1,200, and from $1,200 to $2,400 for an employee and dependents.

Mehrens said that overall, total costs will increase $76,640, with most of that a jump in workers compensation insurance.
