BRENHAM COUNCIL TO HOLD FIRST VOTE ON TAX INCREASE

The proposed City of Brenham tax increase will now go before council in the first of two votes, set for this (Monday) morning.

The first reading and vote will occur today at 8:30 AM.  The second is scheduled for the regular City Council meeting on Thursday at 1:00 PM.  Brenham City Council meets on the second floor of City Hall.

The proposed $0.517 tax rate is one cent higher than last year.  Property appraisals within the city went up sharply this year, by an average of 6 percent.  With the 1 cent increase in the rate, the average homeowner in the city will pay 7 percent more in property taxes this year.

Six people spoke out during a public hearing on the proposed tax increase by the City of Brenham, back on September 7th.

Also at this morning’s meeting, the council is expected to authorize submission for a state grant for the Governor’s Rifle Resistant Body Armor Program.

  1. Just going through the motions , They already know how they will vote. When a private citizen has a sudden repair or needs to do maintenance on their home they have to cut their spending somewhere else. It sure would be nice to just go to my neighbor and say ” I need more money” But it doesn’t work that way. For retired people on a fixed income this tax increase could mean the difference in buying needed prescription medication every month or skipping on the meds in order to be able to save to pay property taxes. some people live on less than $800. a month social security after prescriptions, utilities, groceries and other bills. You do the math. instead of purchasing $ 50,000 lawn mowers and having a city that is way overstaffed, the city needs to try living within their means. Not that it will ever happen. they Just put the Burdon on the backs of the already struggling folks of Brenham..
