BRENHAM FIRE DEPARTMENT SAYS USE DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TO SAVE LIVES

The Brenham Fire Department is recommending citizens use the daylight savings time change this weekend to perform a task that could save lives.icon-Brenham Fire Dept

The fire department says daylight savings is the perfect time to check batteries in smoke alarms. If a smoke alarm is over ten years old it’s time to replace it.

Officials from the fire department say most fatal fires occur at night. Every home needs working smoke alarms to provide an early warning. The fire department says it is important to install smoke alarms in all sleeping rooms, hallways that lead to sleeping areas, basements and each additional level of a home.

Smoke alarms should be mounted on the ceiling 4 inches from the wall and wall mounts should be 4-12 inches from the ceiling. Do not install near draft areas (windows, vents.). In anyone is unsure of placement, they can call the Brenham Fire Department at (979) 337-7300.

The Brenham Fire Department says it is also a great time to prepare and practice an escape plan. They remind citizens to crawl low under smoke, plan where to meet outside, and always stay out once you’ve made it out.

Clocks will be set back one hour this Sunday at 2 a.m.
