Two educators in the Brenham ISD have been honored with prizes from the Brazos Valley School Credit Union.

Brenham Jr. High Librarian Tameka S. Raven and Brenham Early Childhood Learning Center teacher Rebecca Mertz each received one of six $500 cash prizes in the Credit Union’s first annual “Classroom Decorating Contest.”

The BVSCU launched their contest in an effort to help teachers throughout their field of membership prepare their classrooms for the upcoming school year.

Each applicant was required to submit “before” photos of their classroom and an essay detailing how $500 in decorating assistance would help benefit their students.

Raven wrote in her essay, “Our library is considered the heart of our school…furniture would enable me to give the Library the key piece into making it a welcoming, comfortable and creative space…that would touch every patron, teacher, faculty and staff member.”

Mertz wrote in her essay, “I find myself moving back to the same place that I began my teaching career back in 1992. I also attended 3rd and 4th grade in that same hall…I am looking forward to all of the updates…with just a little help not only can I make the classroom colorful and inviting, it will also help with the day-to-day classroom management that is so important to a successful learning program.”

BVSCU received 56 contest applications and the winners were selected by a panel of five judges. “We were excited to receive such a great response from the educational community,” said Yvonne Kershner, BVSCU President and CEO. “We learned a lot about the need for flexible seating, library storage and creative motivational tools through the photos and essays received,” she added.

Other winners came from Fort Bend, Lamar Consolidated, Katy and Bryan school districts.

The Brazos Valley School Credit Union serves over 50,000 members from 10 branch locations. Membership is open to the educational community in 13 counties, family members, community residents and employees of Select Employer Groups
