BRENHAM ISD ADOPTS BUDGET AND TAX RATE

The Brenham Independent School District adopted its proposed budget and tax rate Monday night during the school board meeting.

The total budget has a one percent increase over last year bringing it to $40,651,000.  Most of the increase is due to the proposed 3 percent increase in pay to district teachers and personnel. According to the Director of Business and Finance, Kim Weatherby, the 3 percent increase helps keep the school district competitive with other Texas schools in attracting great teachers.

The proposed tax rate for the district will remain the same at $1.135 per $100 valuation. A small adjustment has been made between the maintenance and operations portion and the debt service portion of the tax, but the total tax rate will remain the same as last year.  Washington County Tax Appraiser Willy Dilworth has reported that property values are up 1.6 percent in the county over last year.  The average residence in the county has a taxable value of $147,000.  The proposed tax rate will mean the average homeowner will owe $107 more in school taxes this year.

Dr. Jamey Johnson then briefed the board on the 2016 state assessments of Brenham ISD. Brenham received a “met standard” rating by the TEA, however Alton Elementary School students failed to meet the standard score of 60 for student achievement, scoring 57.  Alton also fell below the student progress minimum standard of 32, scoring 24. Johnson went on to emphasize that the district is proud of its overall progress. She said that the state had increased the standard by 5 points this last year, so while the standard was not met, the school is still moving forward.

The board then heard from Assistant Superintendent Paul Aschenbeck about the Optional Flexible Day Program for the PRIDE Academy. Aschenback told the board that last year 50 students enrolled and 28 stayed active the whole year, with 11 going on to graduate. He emphasized the importance of having the flexible day program as many of the students have jobs. The board then voted to approve the application to implement the flexible school day program.

The school board also enjoyed a presentation of Brenham High School students who scored a 3, 4, or 5, on AP exams. Twenty four students introduced themselves, the courses that they are involved in, and the teachers that made it possible.
