BRENHAM ISD ONE OF MANY AFFECTED BY S.T.A.A.R. TEST PROBLEMS

Some Brenham students experienced problems Tuesday with the State’s STAAR test.

Officials with the Brenham School District report that during testing Tuesday, some students experienced difficulties in submitting their answers under the test’s guidelines.

According to the Texas Education Agency, this was a state-wide problem that affected numerous districts across the state.

Students who were affected were given an opportunity to log back into the online system and complete the test.

The state’s Education Commissioner Mike Morath called the technical problems that students experienced Tuesday as “simply unacceptable.”

Morath told the Dallas Morning News, “The technical issues experienced today during the online administration of STAAR undermine the hard work of our teachers and students. Kids in the classroom should never suffer from mistakes made by adults.”

This is the first year that Educational Testing Service is administering most of the STAAR testing program. But ETS is not new to handling such large-scale tests, Morath said, “so I cannot accept the transition to a new testing vendor as an excuse for what occurred.”

ETS sent an email to Texas school districts apologizing for the frustration and inconvenience.

Some districts report being placed on hold for over three hours when trying to contact ETS about the testing problems.

  1. My son told me that several of the students were almost finished with the essay style test and that a majority of the answers were lost when the “glitch” happened. Many had to start over.
