BRENHAM ISD PRESENTS ITS DISTRICT INNOVATION PLAN

BISD Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction Dr. Jamey Johnson presents the improvement plan Thursday.

The Brenham School District presented its proposed improvement plan to the District Educational Improvement Committee at a meeting Thursday afternoon.  School districts are now allowed to become a District of Innovation by setting up a local committee made up of principals, teachers, administrators, parents and community members.  The Brenham committee was appointed by the Brenham School Board in December and met in January to decide what needed to be in the Innovation Plan.

The Texas Education Agency allows Districts of Innovation to waive certain TEA requirements.  Brenham is requesting waivers in three areas:

  1. They are requesting an earlier start of the school year in order to balance the fall and spring semesters and allow students to enroll in college courses that begin in June.  Currently the TEA requires that students begin school no earlier than the 4th Monday in August.
  2. The district would like to waive the requirement to hire certified teaches for Career and Technical Education and Dual Credit classes.  This will allow more flexibility in hiring trade professionals and college instructors who may not have their teacher certification but are more than qualified to teach.
  3. The district is requesting a two year probationary period for newly hired teachers in order to evaluate them over several school years. Currently this district is limited to a one year probationary contract.

After the plan was presented, the District Educational Improvement Committee voted to approve it.  It will now go before the Brenham School Board at their February 20th meeting.  If they approve it, the waivers become effective.  It does not need to be approved by the TEA.  The new school year calendar does need to be approved by the school board and it is expected to be presented also at the meeting on February 20th.
